Selection Process

The selection process is divided into 4 stages:

1.  Dropbox/Online Application

The first step when applying for a UWC Scholarship is an application. Candidates can choose to apply through Dropbox or Online application depending on their preference.  Candidates are required to write short answer questions and two essays. The application provides the National Committee with an overview of candidates, personalities, interests, activities, and perspectives. Candidates may choose to apply in either Laotian or English language and language is not taken into consideration.

2.  First round Interview

From the initial list of applicants, a number of applicants will be contacted via email or call to join the First-round interview. The interview will be conducted via phone call or online in early February 2024. The interview will be conducted through a phone call or online platforms depending on each student's preferences and convenience.

The purpose of this stage is to gain a better understanding of each candidate's personality, and ways of thinking. It further helps the Committee and Alumni to ask for any clarification about the application and applicant.

3.  Last Interview/ Group Activities

Then shortlisted candidates will be chosen for a selection day in late February 2024*. They will be contacted directly via call or email to join with their parents/guardians

Parent(s) and guardian(s) are invited to join the presentation as well as the candidates. This presentation is meant to give the parents and candidates a better understanding of the UWC program and scholarship availability.

After the presentation, parents are asked to leave for the candidates to fully participate in the selection process. In this stage, candidates will participate in various group activities including group discussions. There will also be an interview session where each candidate is interviewed by the National Committee.

The purpose of this stage is to gain a better understanding of each candidate's personality, and ways of thinking. It further helps the Committee see how each candidate best fits the UWC mission and values, as well as the National Committee of Laos criteria.

*Prior to the selection day, you will be required to fill out the financial assessment form and provide some sort of financial documents to the National Committee of Laos. These documents will help us to properly match the scholarships with the candidates’ needs and prevent any possible issues in the future.

Decisions on successful candidates made by the UWC National Committee of Laos will be communicated to the selected students and their families a couple of weeks after the last interview.

4.  School and College Notification

After the committee announces the selected candidate(s) and once the candidate and family accept the position offered by the UWC National Committee of Laos. The committee will announce the respective school of the candidate. Once the candidate is accepted by the respective school, the candidate will be working closely with the school and the National Committee until the candidate is ready to enter the new UWC journey.

* This is a tentative timeline, and it is subject to change depending on the situation. However, any changes will be communicated via our Facebook page.

Note: It is vital for the National Committee and Alumni that applicants provide the correct phone number(s) and email address. Please provide your most recent contact information or else we may DISMISS your interview.

*Important note: The National Committee has the right to withdraw the nomination after the selection process if the nominee(s) show inappropriate attitudes and/or actions that do not meet UWC Values.

*Please also note that:

  • An application is made to UWC and not to a particular school or college (although you will be asked to state your preference).
  • Applicants with disabilities who are self-sufficient in their everyday needs are encouraged to apply.

Successful candidates are nominated to specific UWC schools and colleges by the UWC Laos Alumni and the National Committee. The schools and colleges generally accept the nominated candidates on the recommendation of the National Committee but reserve the right to make the final decision on every candidate.
